Oye Lucky Lucky Oye Music Review

When more than half the world is comprised of women, it’s hard to fathom there have only been a few traces of female music composers in India. Usha Khanna was perhaps the most popular woman composer in Bollywood, but new-comers Shibani Kashyap (of the ‘Sajna’ fame) and Sneha Khanwalkar (debuted on the soundtrack of GO) are hoping to change this male dominated industry.

Sneha Khanwalkar, along with the director of the film Dibakar Banerjee, come together in hopes of reviving Punjabi Pop with Oye Lucky Lucky Oye. This may not be the most anticipated album of the year, considering there’s only one well known name on the back cover (Mika), however that’s what makes this album even more intriguing.

Pop sensation Mika kick starts the lineup with the title ‘Oye Lucky’ written by Dibakar Banerjee, Manu Rishi and Kanu Behl. The intro hooks you right away and is looped virtually through the entire song. It slowly starts to lose its unique feel and ends up as a typical Punjabi pop number as soon as you hit the pre-chorus and chorus; but the loop heard in the intro keeps the song listenable. Mika provides a solid consistency throughout for this light hearted start.

What would any Punjabi inspired album be if it didn’t have a song titled ‘Jugni’? Again it’s the intro that reels you in right away. Unlike ‘Oye Lucky’, ‘Jugni’ just gets better and better as every second passes. While sustaining the Punjabi theme, Sneha adds some power chords to give it some serious attitude. Definitely the best song on the album.

Straying from the Punjabi-Pop attack fest, Ms Khanwalkar (let’s hope its Miss, after this album you’d want to marry her too) comes with a very unique sounding ‘Tu Raja Ki Raj Dulari’ sung by Rajbir with lyrics from Mange Ram. Regardless of there being a ninety second intro the track carries a very simple and rustic feel, one of the more enjoyable songs.

If you’re a fan of Sukshinder Shinda’s work from GAL SUN JA and before ‘Superchor’ is right up your ally. This ‘Jugni Part II’ is a hip hop take on the original heard just a song prior. While keeping with the hip hop feel the dhols introduced later into the song only adds to the explosiveness. Dilbahar lends a reliable voice through the length of the song, with Akshay Verma adding a light hearted rap.

‘Hooriyan’ is another up beat number that makes you want to throw your pocket books in the middle, gather in a circle and just dance! Brijesh Shandilya and Himani Kapoor keep up with the fun nature of this track, though the composition and arrangement are what really make you keep coming back.

Remixes are normally a good indication of what not to listen to (sort of like people you have bumper stickers on their cars…good indication that I will never speak to them). So why keep making them?
To keep with the tradition there are only two this time around, ‘Oye Lucky (Remix) and ‘Jugni (Remix)’. The originals are light years better than the alternative versions, but if you want to listen to different arrangements laid over the initial tracks, go for it.

In recent years Punjabi pop has taken a backseat to the new hip-hop/fusion styles introduced by UK based producers such as Rishi Rich, RDB, Punjabi Hit Squad and of course the ever popular Punjabi MC (curse those Brits!). A few years ago it was common for every film to have its very own Nachle Taple Bhangra Pa Le. But, as the Daroo wore off so did the clichéd Bhangra Pop songs.

Before you’re forced to hop onto Sneha Khanwalkar’s bandwagon, get on right now and get yourself a copy of this soundtrack. She’s here to stay and she’s here to give every music director a run for their money.
